Rumors suggest that the revelation of the Nintendo Switch 2 could happen as early as this September or early October, but insiders have mixed opinions.

Nintendo has yet to officially announce a date for unveiling the successor to the Switch, other than it will be revealed before March 2024. However, with summer over, now seems like an ideal time for such an announcement, especially if we look at the release schedule of the original Switch. We could see a teaser in October for a launch next year.

Rumors of an Imminent Announcement

Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz mentioned on Twitter that whispers are circulating about an imminent announcement regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. Industry rumors indicate something related to the Switch 2 could happen this month, though details remain vague, being described as “colleague discussions.”

Other members of the press have heard similar rumors. Andy Robinson of VGC responded to the tweet, saying, “It seems that quite a number of journalists have heard the same thing. But I wouldn’t bet my house on it just yet.”

David Gibson, a video game industry analyst, suggested that the new console could be revealed between September 18 and 26, or early October to avoid overlapping with the Tokyo Game Show (September 26-29). However, it remains uncertain if these are mere speculations or information based on solid sources.

Has Production Already Started?

In a later tweet, Gibson mentioned that the Japanese company Hosiden, which supplies electronic components to Nintendo, plans to spend 1 billion yen on production automation this fiscal year. This could indicate that manufacturing of the new console has already begun. Gibson added that he still expects news in September and a Switch 2 release by March 2025.

Another clue supporting these rumors is that Nintendo typically holds a major Nintendo Direct event in September. The only recent exception was in 2020 when several smaller presentations were held, including announcements for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and a Monster Hunter Rise showcase.

Could Nintendo Skip September?

Last month, Nintendo hosted several smaller presentations, including an announcement for the Nintendo Museum and showcases dedicated to indie games. Given that the first-party game roadmap for the rest of the year is already known, it is possible that Nintendo might skip a major Direct event this month.

Nevertheless, it’s unlikely that Nintendo will make no announcements at all. Even if a full Nintendo Direct doesn’t occur, smaller presentations for major titles like Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership seem almost certain.
