Deadlock Will Valves Game Make Its Way to Consoles

Deadlock, Valve’s upcoming game, is stirring up a lot of curiosity, especially regarding its availability on consoles. Currently in playtesting on PC, what about the console players?

Scheduled for a full release in 2025 or 2026, Deadlock is still deep in development. Right now, only PC players have access to the playtest, leaving console users in the dark about a potential launch on their platforms.

Will Deadlock Arrive on Consoles?

As of now, Valve hasn’t announced plans for a console version of Deadlock. The game appears to be PC-exclusive, and it’s likely to stay that way. Historically, Valve has focused less on console development, with their last attempt being the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Although CS:GO has been a massive hit on PC, the console versions didn’t gain the same popularity. Since this relative failure, Valve has refrained from launching new games on console, concentrating solely on the PC market.

It seems Deadlock will follow this same path, at least for now.

Valve and Console Gaming

Valve has previously expressed the difficulties faced in developing games for consoles. Gabe Newell, Valve’s founder, mentioned feeling “frustrated working in closed gardens,” referring to the constraints imposed by console platforms. According to him, the inability to push updates quickly, sometimes multiple times a day, is a major hurdle for the company.

However, since CS:GO was released over 12 years ago, the gaming industry has evolved significantly, and many companies are now successfully launching cross-platform games. Titles like Valorant, for instance, have found phenomenal success on consoles. Valve might miss out on a substantial market share if they decide to keep Deadlock as a PC-only release.

The Technological Advances Making Console Releases More Viable

With technological advancements and improved capabilities for deploying cross-platform updates, Valve might reconsider its decision in the future. For now, however, no announcement has been made.
