Searching for the next big multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6? Alongside the revival of classic 6v6 and Zombies modes, a 40-player multiplayer mode might make a comeback. Just like the controversial Cold War playlist, this news is stirring up the fan base.
A Reddit user, JedRhino, spotted a PlayStation Store listing for Black Ops 6 that mentions the game “supports up to 40 online players with PS Plus.” This discovery has sparked numerous speculations. While modes like Ground War or Invasion seem probable, the Fireteam mode could also be making its return.

Possible Return of Fireteam Mode in Black Ops 6
Leaks have hinted at an addition of a large-scale mode, but none confirmed which one specifically. In July, leaker Vondyispog tweeted, “A 20v20 mode will arrive post-launch in Black Ops 6.” Initially thought to be Combined Arms (Cold War’s version of Ground War), there was later mention of a potential return of Fireteam.
Introduced in Black Ops Cold War, Fireteam garnered excitement initially but quickly fizzled out. The mode features 10 teams of four players each, battling on sections of the Ural Mountains map to complete objectives. Despite a passionate fan base, empty lobbies made matches difficult to start. Solo players frequently found Fireteam tedious or frustrating due to teammates pursuing their own goals instead of the collective objective.
The rumored 40-player mode may not necessarily be Fireteam, but if it is, it’s likely to undergo significant changes to address previous issues.
