PS5 Pro Can GTA 6 Really Hit 4K at 60fps Experts Weigh In

The PS5 Pro promises enhanced graphics for GTA 6, but experts say hitting 60fps in 4K might be out of reach due to CPU limitations.

Can the PS5 Pro run GTA 6 in 4K at 60 fps? Experts are doubtful. Sony’s enhanced console, which will be available on November 7th for $700, promises boosted performance. However, the question remains whether this power will be enough to offer the best experience on GTA 6, releasing next year. Specialists are skeptical about the PS5 Pro’s ability to reach 60 frames per second in 4K.

Richard Leadbetter, technology editor at Digital Foundry, claims that last year’s GTA 6 trailer likely used a PS5 or Xbox Series X, meaning the standard PS5 should already be capable of impressive graphics. But when it comes to smoothness, the verdict is less encouraging. Leadbetter notes that GTA games are known for being CPU intensive, with complex simulations that often limit the framerate to 30 fps or less upon initial release.

CPU Limitations of GTA 6

Leadbetter highlights that even with the PS5 Pro, achieving 60 fps on GTA 6 will be tough due to the CPU limitations. While the new console boasts a 45% GPU power increase, the CPU remains similar to that of the standard PS5, meaning the game might still target 30 fps on this platform. The engine of GTA 6 will have to handle a city full of complex simulations, including AI routines and physics calculations for pedestrians and traffic, which will strain the processor.

Despite this, the PS5 Pro will offer enhanced visuals for GTA 6 without guaranteeing a 4K 60 fps experience. Leadbetter explains that players can expect more stable performance and visual enhancements, but not necessarily a significant framerate boost. There is no indication Rockstar is aiming for 60 fps on the standard PS5, so it’s unlikely the PS5 Pro will achieve it either.

Benefits of the PS5 Pro GPU

However, some games will benefit from the increased GPU power of the PS5 Pro. With 45% more graphical power, titles using dynamic resolution will see an improvement in image quality, and games facing framerate issues at 60 fps in their performance modes should run smoother. For instance, Leadbetter hopes that a game like Elden Ring will finally achieve a stable 60 fps thanks to the PS5 Pro.

On the other hand, the PS5 Pro’s 8K capabilities, highlighted by Sony, will likely only be utilized by a minority of developers like Polyphony Digital (creators of Gran Turismo 7), as few players own 8K compatible screens.

Comparison with PCs

The PS5 Pro is priced at $700, sparking debate among gamers about whether to invest in a gaming PC instead. But Leadbetter points out that a PC capable of comparable performance to the PS5 Pro would cost significantly more. He cites the example of an RTX 4070 GPU, which is the closest in terms of performance but already costs around $540, not to mention the rest of the components needed for a high-performing PC.
