On July 26th, the actors’ union officially announced the start of a massive strike affecting the video game industry. This news shook the community eagerly awaiting GTA 6, a series known for its top-notch voice acting. However, recent reports confirm that these strikes won’t delay GTA 6’s release.
Just after the strikes rocked Hollywood and the movie industry, they have now reached the gaming world. Several major players, including Activision, Disney, EA Productions, Epic Games, and Take 2 Productions, are currently in negotiations with SAG-AFTRA. The union aims to protect voice actors from the misuse of AI. Despite the ongoing discussions, “The artists working on the game (i.e., GTA 6) are still permitted to continue their work on the project,” according to a union representative.
Rockstar Games and 2K Games fans can breathe a sigh of relief, especially since GTA Online remains one of the most played games at the moment.
GTA 6 Development Remains on Track Despite Strikes
Thanks to its lengthy development, GTA 6 won’t face delays. Although the identities of the voice actors are still unknown, the game’s development started long before the September 2023 strike. Only projects initiated after this date are impacted by the boycott. SAG-AFTRA’s main goal is to protect actors’ rights against the use of AI to replicate their voices and likenesses without consent.
The aim isn’t to ban AI usage outright but to regulate it in a way that ensures actors’ images are protected. While it’s unclear how long this strike will last, comparing it to the recent TV industry strikes, which delayed many projects by months or even years, gives an idea of the potential impact. Nonetheless, Grand Theft Auto 6 is still slated for a 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a PC launch to follow at a later date.
